The CIPD has published a report looking at whether work in the UK is becoming more insecure. The report finds that ‘Employment insecurity affects many people but, overall, work in the UK is as secure as it was 20 years ago, with limited evidence of growing casualisation’. The report claims that most people in employment situations such as self-employment, working in the digital gig economy or on a zero hours contract, choose to work in this way and are broadly satisfied with their situation. The report calls on the government to focus more attention on improving quality of employment for employed people and to do more to address the causes of low pay and discrimination at work.
